We are very proud of the 3 fighters listed below and for all those people that helped us prepare. A special Thanks to Master Meng and his Wisdoms and proven teaching methods.

Daniel Duran wins Gold, 1st place in Full Contact San Shou.

Cesar Hernandez wins Silver, 2nd place in Full Contact San Shou

Kevin Hill gets disqualified for hitting the opponent in the face to many times during continues sparring.(no hitting to face, side of head, body shots)

Now a more detailed report.

Daniel Duran is a Leadership member at MMA of Houston. He is a 1st Black Sash. Before this competition Daniel had 4 San Shou fights, one Cage Fight and 1 continuous sparring match and former Wing Chun Grand Champion in 2006. This past weekend he had 3 matches. The person he had to fight for the gold had a coach that is a 2x San Shou champion and on the Current National team-and his coach is the National Team coach for the U.S. In my opinion Daniel had some of the best takedown in the whole competition. In one exchanged the opponent took Daniel down, Daniel reversed it and got a full mount and pulled back to punch just to show the superior position. This person is also a BJJ student. Daniel is going to have one more cage fight this fall in September.

Cesar Hernandez is currently a green sash and Black Sash member at MMA of Houston. Cesar was in the Heavy Weight division. His opponent was 285lbs. Cesar was 256lb. His opponent had a height and reach advantage. Cesar did a great job on knowing is distance. He either had to be inside or way outside to deal with the differences in reach. He pulled off a great takedown which you rarely see the big guys do. In the third round with a takedown Cesar’s opponent’s knee hit the side of Cesar’s knee, and the fight had to be ended due to the injury. I believe if the third round could have continued I think Cesar would have gotten the gold. Before the 3rd round they were tied. The 3rd round was going in Cesar favor until the injury.

Kevin Hill has been a student here at MMA of Houston for 8 months. Testing this Friday for his orange sash. Kevin Hill is also a Black Sash member. This was Kevin’s 1st tournament. Continues sparring is medium energy and only kicking and striking. No hitting to face, knees, groin or the back of the body. Kevin engaged the opponent and with seconds hit the face several times. Ref called 1st warning. 2nd engagement, same thing happened. 2nd and final warning. Kevin tried to take and outside flank and hit the side of the head but instead hit the jaw by accident. At that point he was disqualified. The total engagement was no more than 40 seconds. I estimate Kevin hit the opponent 6-8 times. He was never hit in the head, only a low kick and a punch to the shoulder he took. Next year Kevin says he wants to try San Shou.

We are so very proud of all three fighters and all the hard work that went in to preparing for this. We are looking to expand our fight team and grooming some currently fighters track students for next year and other competitions.

We will be putting some of the footage on youtube.com soon as well the Houston’s website.
